Why should we be using bridal company pictures for our ads when we have the most beautiful Simply Elegant brides in the world?! So the search for our featured bride began. They were sent notices inviting them to enter the Featured Bride Contest. The winner would receive a 50% refund on the cost of her dress, be used in our advertisements and on the home page of our revised website. 10 brides entered, their pictures were posted in albums on our FACEBOOK page and it was great fun to read the wonderful comments from their loyal friends! At the end of 2 weeks Charity had 11,970 points.

My Story

"Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass" is the passage of Scripture God has so mightily used in my life. We all make "new year's resolutions" and mine for 2010 was to simply trust the Lord for more; to have such a faith in Him that it would revolutionize my life. I even took it a step further. By faith, I claimed December 11, 2010, as the day I would marry the man of my dreams! 12.11.10. What a fun wedding date! And so the year began... All along God was leading me in His will. It wasn't that I just had to get married; no, no. It was believing the Lord and trusting that He would guide me in every aspect of life. And He absolutely did just that!

James' side of the story is that he had considered asking me on a date for quite a while, but was nervous because of my dad. Who would have guessed that a 6'6" man would intimidate anyone at all? However, he did finally muster up the courage to speak to me and invited me to go out one night with a group of friends. After that first ‘date’, I had such peace that James was the one God had saved for me. I think I even pinched myself to make sure it all was still real life! God truly exceeds our expectations!

I must admit that I was anticipating the day I could say YES to James. I thought I had to look my absolute best every single day because an engagement is a very big thing, you know! Friday morning, December 10, 2010, I woke up to the sound of the ringtone for my mom. She called at approximately 7:47 am and practically saved my life that day because for whatever reason I never heard an alarm! Fortunately, I made it to work only a few minutes late. Whew! What a long day this is going to be! James was off work so we planned to spend the afternoon Christmas shopping. I knew that was NOT the day James would propose because all that could potentially go wrong did, and the day I would get engaged would just have to be the most perfect day, so it was impossible!! So off we go making our way to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg to shop and look at the Christmas lights. We were having so much fun! Then came Primrose Walk. We stayed on that little lane for quite some time, and I was sure any minute my hands would fall off from frost bite! It was bitter cold! I asked him a few times if he was ready to start walking again, but he kept lingering looking at the lights on that little lane. We talked for a few more minutes then down on one knee he went! My first reaction was "Really? Are you serious?" Then he replied, "Uh, YEAH! Is that a yes??"

You would think the rest of the night went perfectly, but James hadn't been to Gatlinburg before and had gotten turned around because we had walked so far! It took us some time to finally find the car, but once we did we both began to tell the world of the wonderful news that we were getting married. Oh, and may I mention that although I wasn’t exactly married on 12.11.10 as I had hoped, I did wake up that morning with a gorgeous diamond ring on my finger. To God be the glory.

Next was to find that perfect wedding dress. The dress every girl dreams of wearing on her wedding day. James only asked one thing of me, and that was that we have a wedding that those involved be dressed elegantly but modestly. There are many stores to shop, however, Simply Elegant was the only option because it is the best option. I knew there I would find a dress that not only would be absolutely beautiful but modest. Dana is so very qualified in helping select a gown that meets your standard. She will do her best to fulfill your wishes. She certainly fulfilled mine! I fell in love with the fourth dress I tried on...it was just perfect! The detail and quality were exquisite. The feeling I had in that moment is indescribable. I had found the dress. I am so grateful for Dana and Simply Elegant. I highly recommend any bride looking for a modest gown to go to none other than Simply Elegant. Both James and Charity graduated from Crown College of the Bible and are currently serving in the youth ministry at their church.

Weddings 50 Years Ago

My thoughtful mother annually renews a subscription to our home town newspaper us. The town is actually too small to have a newspaper so it's the Yell County Record covering the entire county news. One my favorite articles is the 50 Years Ago, YCR Revisits the Past.
Having a bridal shop, I am always drawn to the wedding announcements. The simplistic descriptions and unique vocabulary draw such an elegant picture of what it was like. I love envisioning how she might have looked and felt on her wedding day. The one thing that is probably the same for every bride through the years is the love she has for her groom and the dreams she has for their future together.
For those, like me, that share the love for the days gone by, I thought I'd share a recent reprint of a wedding announcement from September 1961.

Stewart-King-Arrangements of white gladiolus and glowing white tapers against a background of coal green fern adorned the altar of the Parkway Baptist Church of Minden, LA. For the wedding of Miss Billie Jean Stewart and Bobby John King on the afternoon of Saturday, July 16.
The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Era J. Stewart and the late Mr. Stewart of Minden, LA. and the bridegroom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. John G. King of Ola, AR.
The Rev. Cornelious Uhrens of Little Rock, AR performed the ceremony. Miss Patsy Slay, organist played nuptial selections as the candles were lit by Frances Simpson and Miss Peggy Sue James and accompanied Miss Rita Barron as she sang "Because."
Mrs. G.D. Shores attended her sister as matron of honor and the bridesmaids were Miss Gloria Ann Hill and Miss Frances Stewart.
Roger O'Neil of Little Rock, AR served as best man and the groomsmen were Jerry Strickland, Dicky Simpson and Tom Freeman.
The bride entering the church with her uncle, Marvin Stewart, who gave her in marriage, was lovely in a ballerina length gown of white embroidered organza over slipper satin. The basque bodice designed with a boat neckline edged in embroidered scallops and elbow length sleeves extended to a point in back and accented by a large flat bow of organza. The bouffant skirt terminated in embroidery scallops. Her tiered short veil of misty illusion was held in place by a crown. She wore white satin slippers, short white gloves and a single strand of pearls. The bridal bouquet was a cascade of snowy white stephanotis.
Mr. and Mrs. King are residing in Minden, LA.

Happy 50th Anniversary, Mr. & Mrs. King. I hope you have lived happily ever after.

Choosing Who to Bring to Gown Shopping

Bridal gown shopping is serious, fun. It can be overwhelming with all of the choices. It gets tiring trying on those heavy gowns. Besides the mental and emotional stress of deciding which one will be the choice you live with the rest of you your life.

That's why selecting the right guests to accompany you to your appointment is so critical. This shopping day is like no other, one to be cherished. So choose wisely!

10. Negative Nelly - If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't! Honesty is good, when ask, but don't be critical.

6. The Stubborn Mom - don't make the bride feel like she has to please you first. If you respect her, she'll respect your opinions. Purpose to develop a special bond.
5. The Bossy Friend - Never tell the bride what to do. Listen and focus on what the bride feels.
4. The Unfocused Guest - Focus on your bride, not everything or everyone else in the store. Bridal ADD says "I'm more important than you."
3. The Overbearing Mom - Don't force your opinions on the bride. You had your day, help her create her own day.
2. The Jealous Bridesmaid - Don't let envy take over, it only makes you look bad and the bride feel guilty.
1. The Spotlight Stealer - Don't choose a dress that looks the same as the brides. Even something outrageous like we saw at the royal wedding. You'll get attention, but not the kind you want.

The Royal Collection

The Royal Wedding was such a treat this year. There were hints and look alikes of Kate's gown in almost every showroom at market in Atlanta last week. I was thrilled to find a replica headpiece and earrings.

Our newest accessory vendor, Richard Designs, is located in the UK and gave us some interesting information on the pieces.

The Royal Tiara

The tiara was, as expected, from the royal collection. Catherine's 'Something Borrowed' was on loan from the Queen's private collection, made by Cartier in 1936, and a present for the late Queen Mother. Traditional yet discreet, the tiara sat high enough to lift the soft draped veil from her face.

The Royal Jewelry

As a wedding present from her parents for her 'something new' these diamond set drops were made to compliment the Cartier tiara that she wore on that day. Delicate and perfectly portioned they were designed to echo the elements within the Middleton Family newly appointed Coat of Arms. These loverly jewels were made up of a stylised oak leaf with a pear shaped-diamond set drop and suspended pave set acorn at the center.

Atlanta Prom Market Review

My trip to the prom market in Atlanta proved very promising. My favorite styles are by Bonny and their Mystique prom line. They showed some very nice and uniques styles at reasonable prices!!

The most unique and trendy style featured a fuchsia pink empire bodice with a cap sleeve. The skirt is black and white animal skin print that's opened to just below the knee with ruffle edge along the hem.

They had also used style BSO7833 and added beading to the neckline and the side gathered waistline; it will be offered in plum, turquoise or pink.Very elegant!!

They introduced a flutter sleeve which is a nice change, more fitted styles. Several styles are in charmeuse fabric in jewel colors. I can't wait for you to see them.

Bella didn't have much that was new or different from last year. I'm still trying to decide what to order from them.

Recently, I was in contact with a store owner out west that has a fabulous private line. When she returns from China she'll send me pictures of her designs. I'm very excited about the possibility of offering some of them:)

"Why Won't Stores Carry Modest Dresses?"

...is one of the most frequently ask questions I hear. The reason is very simple; because so many girls buy an immodest dress and cover it with a jacket, substitute sheer straps for shoulders, or patch it!

Why should they invest thousands of dollars in a modest line of dresses, purchasing the required minimums twice a year for you to try on when they know most girls are willing to accept what they offer? They don't care how it looks when you wear it or the image you portray. They sure aren't worried about your purity or testimony of holiness. They are concerned about turning a profit and their stores reputation of offering the latest styles. Modesty is not what they want to be known for!

The solution is very simple; stop purchasing immodest dresses! If every saved, born again young lady would refuse to purchase from stores that refuse to carry modest dresses, they would create a demand, resulting in a market for modest gowns.

Why not purchase from those that share your conviction of modesty; then their businesses would flourish. They would be able to carry more lines of dresses for you to choose from and then more stores could be opened; eliminating the need to have to purchase gowns online.

It only takes one person to desire a change; to vote NO to stores that don't care about Godliness and Holiness. What store are you voting for this year?

Voices of Praise

I was blessed to meet Voices of Praise at our mid-week service. They did a fabulous job ministering in song!! Amazingly, most of them had actually visited our website. It was so exciting to see some of the faces of the hundreds of daily visitors on our website.

I know when you shop online it feels a little cold and it doesn't seem like anyone's wondering if "you're finding everything ok?" or "if you have any questions?" But there really is someone here. I check daily, sometimes twice to see how many have stopped by that day and wonder if they saw something they liked or if they left with unanswered questions.

Yes, internet shopping is a little lonely for both of us, I wish I could see all the smiling faces of each "number" shown on the statistic page. Take a minute to use the Contact Us page don't be a secret shopper;)

Amazing Dress Transformation

I was so thrilled with the work our seamstress did on this brides dress; I had to share it!

A bride ordered the style shown below in white but needed 3/4 length sleeves and wanted to know if we could add a detachable train. I knew the seamstress had done some amazing remakes so I told her we could and ordered extra fabric.

I was so excited to see how the dress was transformed with 3/4 length sleeves.

I was so anxious for the bride to see it I made these pictures to e-mail her before I shipped it. She was a pretty laid back bride to let someone remake her dress without seeing how it would turn out! Obviously, she was pleased with it!

Good seamstresses are a dying breed. If you have the slightest interest in sewing you should seriously consider learning to sew and do alterations. It is a rare skill that pays well.

That Which is Put in....Taketh From the Garment

Recently, I came across this scripture again, "No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. Matt.9:16" I understand my post isn’t the exact interpretation of the scripture, however it does bring to mind the truth that on a patched garment fabrics do not match, drawing adverse attention to the garment which results in a poor appearance.

Many of us only hear stories of the embarrassing days of having to wear a patch on your clothes never having experienced the shame for ourselves.... or have we?

Bringing honor to our King, the Lord Jesus Christ is our purpose in a world that year by year grows darker in unrighteousness. What a great opportunity we have to honor the LORD. One way many Christians choose to give honor is by adorning themselves in modest clothing.

However, in the world of formal wear, modest and formal are foreign to each other. The term, formal gown, seems to mean revealing gown. Some try to take the world’s formal gowns and make them modest. As admirable as that is, the result usually “takes from the garment”, drawing adverse attention. Leaving nonbelievers with the impression that modest formal wear means botched formal wear. Standing out in a negative way does not point others to Christ, but to the person wearing it and “that which is put in.”

For years, Christians have settled for patching their formal wear with tied or pinned wraps, “it’s the closest I could find” fabrics or an “it will have to do” jacket, but things have changed now! No longer do we have to settle for second best, we can have the “whole” dress!

Ladies it’s time to move on to the best when it comes to representing the Lord in our formal wear. There are modest formal gowns in styles and prices for everyone. Even hand made gown, (not homemade) can look nice. You may have to search a little more but not as much as you will search trying to find fabric to match the other one you're considering:) Let's..."give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. I Timothy 5:14 Let's purpose to wear the best formal wear for the Lord.

Recent Bridal Shows

We are off to a great summer start. Our first bridal show was in Monroe at the conference center on the South Peidmont Community College campus. It was rainy evening, but we had a good time and met some very nice brides and mothers.

The next week we were in Greenville, SC for the Wedding Festivals show. If you've never attended one you must go!! They are the most professionally done shows I've ever seen, offering many great decorating ideas besides the vendors booths.

I was very pleased with our booth displays, as were many others who complimented on them.

Even with the power outage in Greenville, (another stormy evening for a show) the emergency lighting added a wonderful ambience to our gowns, just as if it were a candle lit ceremony.

Our gowns were also well received during the fashion show.

Our next show is the Sword of the Lord Conference in Walkertown, NC, July 27-31. We'll be showing clearance formal gowns up to 75% off. Great back to school shopping;)

We'll be attending the Wedding Festivals in Asheville, NC on September 24. I hope we'll see many modest brides there as well.

Trust the Size Chart

What a thrill it is to get an e-mail with pictures of Simply Elegant customers in their beautiful dress that she's thrilled with! Occassionally, there are those that don't follow the size charts or measuring instructions and are disappointed:( I am too!

Fortunately, the companies I carry are accurate with their sizing and I know I can trust them. By going to market and ordering samples I am able to know how and if it can be altered giving you better advice when you order online.

I recently received this testimony that everyone must read! I can not thank Tara and Kayla enough for sending this note and pictures.

I wanted to say Thank you for carrying a line of modest formal wear. We were extremely pleased with the dress we ordered MS174 it was perfect. The dress was just as described and the quality was superb. I'm always scared of what you will get when ordering on-line. I appreciate the promptness of getting the dress to us considering we ordered it only two weeks before her event, but it arrived exactly when you said it would, you are wonderful.

The dress fit perfect so anyone looking at this dress would do good to go with measurements as suggested by the maker. I've enclosed pictures that you may use if you wish for anyone looking at the dress. Girls it is beautiful.

I'm also including Kayla's measurements to show how well the size chart works. Kayla normally wears a 10 to 12 depending on the outfit the chart suggested a size 16 and it fit perfect. her size b(39)w(33)h(40) the size chart b(41.5)w(32.5)h(44) the bust even though a little larger on chart worked by just using the right undergarment, and we did not have to get any alterations. Kayla is also 5'7" and wore a 3" heal so dress fit as it should in length.

Again I want to say Thank you for all your help, Simply Elegant will always be our first choice when looking for future formal wear.

Did you know the term “prom” comes from the word “promenade” a procession of guests arriving at a formal event. The name is derived from the late nineteenth century practice of a promenade ball. The end of year tradition stemmed from the graduation ball tradition. In Victorian times the upper class held grand balls where each guest was announced before entering. Maybe you should suggest that be added to the order of events at your banquet or promenade.

Deciding Between Two Gowns

Most brides easily find THE one and nothing else compares, but then there are a few brides that find two dresses that they love equally. Trying to decide which gown is the right one is very stressful because this is a one time decision that you have to live with the rest of your life. You don’t want to go down the isle thinking, I wish I had chosen the other one.
This list of questions should help to eliminate one of them. Be sure you take pictures of yourself in each gown; that gives you the image you’ll be seeing the rest of your life. Then ask…
~ Which one matches the setting and the ceremony site? Historical? Elegant? Outdoor? Traditional?
~ Which one matches your wish list? Review your wedding notebook; which style gown do you have the most of?
~Which one would you choose if money didn't matter? The bridal gown is the feature of the day, and will be the focal point of your pictures. How many wedding favors or reception food do you remember?
~ Which one is different from every other bride you’ve seen lately?
Now order your gown and finish planning your wedding the hardest decision in over.

Inaugural Ball Customers

As many others did we watched the inaugural activities on TV, while some of our customers had the opportunity to actually be there. One was a high school senior invited to the Youth Ball. Then Melissa sent some pictures of her in the dress she purchased to wear to the Illinois Ball. A former high school friend’s mom was helping coordinate the ball and ask their high school choir to reunite and sing in the hallways. Wouldn’t that be a nice reunion?!

Many were expecting Mrs. Obama to wear something more stunning, maybe I should send her one of my cards for her next formal event;)

Gift Registry Etiquette

Gift giving is a tangible representation of your guests love and support. A wedding invitation sent to local friends and family, carries a gift-in-return obligation. Gifts should not be expected from out of town guests and those you are not personally close to. Those are considered more of an announcement.

In our wonderful society of technology, I think the gift registry is a great idea. It helps friends and family know they are selecting things you need and like; greatly eliminates the duplication problem and having to return items. Out of town guests can view your registry locally or shop online and have it shipped to you.

When registering it’s a good idea to select several locations with a variety of price ranges that all of your guest can afford. After you have completed this wonderful wish list how is everyone to find out where all you have registered?? ....by word of mouth!! Give your mother, his mother and your maid of honor a list of the stores you have registered at and see how fast word travels!!

This tradition is one not to be broken as many are today. Emily Post states, “…the practice of including lists of gift registries on (or in) wedding invitations is considered tacky and unacceptable…” With the invitation implying a gift-in-return, there is no need to say “I want it from here.” Even worse would be to include are gift receipt reminder, implying that “I plan to return it.” Anyone wanting to purchase a gift will generally ask a friend where you are registered. The exception to this would be the hostess may include that information in a shower invitation because this is a specific gift giving time.

On a side note, you may be interested to know that a written thank-you note is not mandatory if a personal “Thank-you” was given at the shower. For more answers to your wedding etiquette questions purchase or borrow books by Emily or Peggy Post.

Some Great Ideas

I thought I'd take a moment to show you some creative ideas other brides have had lately. The skys the limit when it comes to mixing and matching colors; or changing a dress.

I thought these colors looked delicious! Who doesn't love chocolate and the ice mint color looks so nice. We even have a paisley vest in these colors for the guys.

This one turned out lovely in the teal and white.

I just have to show off this adorable picture of my grandson in the tux he picked out while visiting the store the other day.

We have recently closed our Tenneessee location and are getting everything consolidated into our SC and NC locations just in time for a very busy holiday and formal season.

I am very excited about our prom choices and the exclusive gowns we'll have this spring;)

It's so much fun to talk to our wonderful customers who share the same modest desires. Keep us in your prayers that we will honor the Lord and select the styles you love to wear.

A Simply Elegant Bride Slide Show

Ordering Bridesmaid Dresses

I hope to help you understand the ordering process and explain why ordering formal wear isn’t like ordering anything else. Keep in mind this is the brides day and you don’t want do your own thing and cause trouble for the group.

For those desiring to raise or change a neckline or lengthen a sleeve, or possibly even convert an immodest to a modest dress some companies do offer custom changes for an additional fee however, not all bridal shops will offer this option because of the slight liability of mistakes or the image they desire their store to represent.

When to order?
Once the style has been chosen it’s important to select an order date 10-12 weeks before the wedding. Doing so will eliminate rush fees and stress!!

Where to order?
It’s very important that all dresses be ordered from one store to ensure that the dresses are made from the same bolt of fabric otherwise the dye lot maybe different. The bride needs to select the store, (we offer 10 % discounts to maids when the bride purchases her bridal gown from us, others may offer similar packages) and out of town maids can have measurements taken at a local bridal shop hopefully that may carry that brand giving her the possibility of trying on her size choice. An alteration shop or your seamstress would be a good substitute.

What size to order?
When having measurements taken wear undergarments/shape wear (if necessary) you plan to wear with the dress. (Chiffon and other soft thin fabrics reveal bulges and roles more than other satins or taffetas.) Select your size according to the size chart for that company. These dresses do run smaller than our everyday “vanity” sized clothing. Even then each company has a different size chart, so don’t think the size you wore in last wedding will be the same as this wedding.

If your measurements fall between 2 or more sizes ask your seamstress to look at a picture or the actual dress and see what she recommends. Some brands have a seam allowance for letting out, but that is not always possible. When in doubt order according to the largest measurement it can always be taken in but it can not always be let out.

Height should also be considered, maids taller than 5’8-5’9 may need to order extra length depending on heel height being worn.

Expectant Maids
I recommend expectant bridesmaids should select by their bust measurement, possibly a size larger depending on the length of time until the wedding. An extra yard of fabric should be ordered if it isn’t a maternity style for the seamstress to put gussets, pleats or other design to allow for the tummy measurement.

Alterations
All bridesmaids should expect some alterations for a perfect fit. The dresses are special ordered, but not custom made to your measurements. The two most common alterations we see are hemming, because formal gowns are made to accommodate the 5’8-5’9 customer, because they can’t add length leaving the rest of us to hem or wear some high platforms;) The other common alteration is shoulder alterations for shorter torsos.

The big question, “what if it doesn’t fit, can I return it?”
The answer is always, no. That’s why we work very hard to help you determine the closest size, resulting in minimal alterations. Customer’s following our instructions have very few problems, it’s those that don’t believe we know what we’re talking about that have problems and want to return or exchange or expect refunds. Any respectable business will take care of real problems such as factory defects. We even offer the option of ordering a second at 50% off if you ordered incorrectly and alterations are not possible to correct the problem.

Olympic Hostesses

I've enjoyed watching the Olympics over the past few weeks beginning with the opening ceremonies. What I really enjoy is seeing the hostesses in their beautiful dresses. (I'd like to have some replicas made for prom/banquet season. I'll have to ask one of the companies what the possibilities are;)) The grace, beauty and charm they exhibit has been lost in our world today making them so fascinating!

My Trip to Market

Yesterday I went to Americas Mart in Atlanta. This photo is of building 3 with 13 floors. It was primarily a prom market, but some were showing bridal gowns as well on floors 5 and 10. The others were showing everything else you can imagine.

I was especially thrilled with company changes Eternity is making for retailers and customers. This is a family owned company and the youngest son is now in charge with a great vision and ideas for the future. One of the great things is that all dresses will be available in all colors available for that fabric. It may require a special order, but there is no extra charge for that.

They will no longer be selling dresses online, he feels like young ladies should have the shopping experience not that of opening a box. Therefore he’ll be working to get more stores to carry them.

They have some great new styles, I love the taffeta and lace that is so popular.

Bonny has added some modest styles to their prom, but unfortunately they are so low, front and back I won’t be offering them. Hopefully, they’ll have some good styles in the special occasion line that they’ll be showing in October.

Bella didn’t have their modest styles ready for the show they should have them ready for the October show.

I plan to do some exclusive gowns again this year. The one I did last year was the only one I sold completely out of.

Choosing Bridesmaids and Their Dresses

Who to choose? What to wear? How to please them? So many questions go into the bridesmaid selection and dress decision. Lately, I’ve had several brides with difficult bridesmaid situations, which means several others are going through these situations also.

Many brides have been planning their wedding for years including who will be their maids. Typically, the list includes family and close friends. I’ve seen some out of obligation, others are self proclaimed bridesmaids. However, they earn their title the bride must keep gracious control of the situation. Beware of being the please all bride, it is impossible and you run the risk of losing the final goal you originally had in mind.

The one thing to remember is the final goal; a Christ honoring ceremony that represents the bride and grooms theme. What will you have left when the ceremony is over? Memories and pictures! If you keep the final goal in mind it will help keep you focused and help you explain your goals and reason for your choices to others.

Planning Tip: Remember when you played paper dolls? Well, one of the best ways to get the picture of how your wedding party will look is to print out pictures of your dress choices and even tux choices (buildatux.com) and lay them out together until you find the look you want.

Maids need to remember their position is supporting the bride. This is not their wedding; they have accepted a position and it should be done out of respect for the bride. If they don’t wish to support her day with a willing heart and pay the expenses that come with the position, (even if they don’t like the dress or the color, that’s part of it) then they should politely ask for another way to help make your day special. I had a bride in tears when her maids encouraged her to get the more expensive dress, because they wanted her to have what she wanted. That was true selflessness and a great example of how bridesmaids should support their bride. Try to help difficult maids see the final goal you have in mind. (show them your paper dolls;)

Once you’ve selected your gown it’s time to select a complimentary bridesmaid gown. That doesn’t mean it has to look just like yours, but you don’t want the maids to be distracting either. When you begin your search limit your help to your maid of honor or a friend that knows your goal and taste and will offer opinions, but not try to sway your decision. Allowing bridesmaids to vote will only result in hurt feelings for you or the maids. The bride, feeling like you had to please a maid or a maid because her favorite was not chosen.

Of course, the bride should be considerate of her maids and their needs as well. Here are five factors I recommend to keep in mind when selecting a bridesmaid dress.

First, is it modest? Christ honoring? Many churches, temples and synagogues have guidelines you must follow, be sure to ask before purchasing your gowns. You should also practice the courtesy rule; go by the maid with the most conservative dress requirements. If you don’t want to have a dress that conservative in your end result, then you need to offer that girl another position in your wedding, instead of asking her to bring reproach on the testimony she has. A good rule of thumb when selecting modest styles is the Sunday worship test; would I wear this to worship services? If not, then you need to keep searching, modest bridesmaids dresses are out there even if you have to have them made; just be careful of the quality appearance. I was thrilled to have a maid come in one day to see the dress that had been selected by the bride; she wanted to see if she would be able to be in the wedding. She told me how people knew she had certain standards and she didn’t want to change them to be in a wedding. She was putting her God before her friend, I am sure the Lord was pleased with that!

Second, is keep in mind the quality of your gown; you don’t want a Dillard vs. Wal-Mart look. This will show up in the pictures.

Third; consider the style of your gown; you don’t want to mix a traditional gown with a contemporary style bridesmaid dress.

Next, is to consider the fabric your gown is made of. Sometimes it really ties the end result together when the fabrics are the same.

Lastly, is to consider the age range and sizes of your maids. I recently had a bride who was the baby of the family which means her sisters were much older and had children. Selecting a dress that was a general style was her best choice covering age and body shape. Typically, empire styles and waist accent dresses are the best for all body styles.

Following these suggestions will help make the best choice for your wedding day. Later, I’ll explain the ordering process.

National Sword of the Lord Conference

What a wonderful time I had last week in Winston-Salem, NC! The southern hospitality and uplifting preaching is unbeatable. I attend every year (except 2007 because we were moving); it gives me a chance to let others around the nation know there are actually modest bridal and formal gowns available, plus the clearance sale for the formal gowns and accessories is always a hit.

When I was there in 2006 I had several young girls disappointed that there wasn’t something for them so I decided to take my discontinued flower girl dresses this year. (Isn’t that when we should start teaching modesty, in the earliest years?) I met the most precious little girls this week! Kinsey was a regular visitor to my booth and wore her dress to services several times. I was so encouraged by her father’s attitude of wanting her to dress like a princess, he obviously loved his daughter! However, I think he had his limit of dresses after a few days:)

I also met Nikki who enjoyed wearing her dress to services and an afternoon of modeling with Kathryn, a lovely young lady from TN.

Nikki also introduced me to her friend, Casey and cousins Susanna and Caroline. Their youthful excitement is wonderful to be around!
My sample wedding gown got rave reviews from the visitors, just an example of how lovely you can look on your wedding day without sacrificing your testimony or style.

I also spoke with a dear lady who is in the beginning stages of developing a bride’s devotional book to be used during the time she plans her wedding. I will be sure to let you know when it is complete; every Christian bride should have one, to keep her focus on the Lord during that special time in her life.

“I Ordered Online and it Didn’t Fit”

I have received two phone calls this week (not to mention the others I’ve received recently) from brides searching for a last minute gown; they had purchased online (not from me)and it doesn’t fit. Keep in mind that you should expect some alterations for a perfect fit no matter where you purchase. Let’s talk about online ordering, I’ve had several bride’s order online within the last month.

Why do brides order online? Most order modest gowns online because they can’t get them in their area. Others because they think they’re saving money. In our Wal-Mart, McDonald’s, self serve, discount world, brides don’t realize the benefit and cost savings an educated bridal consultant can be to them. You deserve the pampering and special treatment, you are the bride! You may think you're getting a discount by purchasing online, but by the time you add up the cost of steaming the gown and a vinyl storage bag (which is at least $100 additional cost, most stores provide these with the purchase), unnecessary alterations from selecting the wrong size, plus your shipping costs (and return shipping) you really didn’t save that much, if any. In the long run you’ll spend much more trying to fix the mistake you’ve ordered, plus all of the Tylenol or Advil you’ll buy for the stress and headache you’ll find yourself in.

Ordering a wedding gown or bridesmaids dresses online is a risk. There are so many dishonest online stores who say they carry any dress you want; when in reality they are participating in illegal transshipping. They don’t even have contracts with the bridal company; they have another store buy it for them. Reputable bridal companies will withhold orders they find out are being transshipped resulting in you not getting a gown or gowns being substituted.

Then there are pretend factories some are listed on e-bay, saying you can buy direct from them. Many show a designer picture making you believe that’s what you’re getting, and they make something that looks similar, but very poor quality! I know I’ve steamed one a bride purchased. Honestly, it looked like an intermediate level seamstress made that dress! The fabrics are so cheap they wrinkle if you touch it. Don’t even consider going this route.

I highly recommend at least traveling the distance to a store that carries the gown you think you want to purchase. That way you can at least try on gowns from that company and get an idea of the way the size will fit or if you should order another. Each designer has their own size charts; what size fits in one company may not fit in a different company. They can order the dress for you and then ship it to you when it arrives.

If you still decide to order online you must follow these rules:
1. Make sure the store is listed on the companies store locator.
2. Make sure it’s an actual bridal store, not just an online business.
3. If you can’t speak to a person who actually knows about that line of gowns, don’t order from them.
4. Make sure you go by the company size chart, they aren’t lying. I know it may be a much larger size than you normally wear, take the tag out and say it’s whatever size you want it to be. Do not just order your regular size, unless it matches the size chart.
5. If the sizing falls between 2 or more sizes, ask your seamstress what she recommends is best for doing alterations. Typically, you must order by the larger measurement to ensure that it is wearable and can be taken in, not all manufacturers allow a large seam allowance, so you can’t guarantee it can be let out if you order too small. The sales person should also know about possible alterations.
5. Only put down the required deposit on special order gowns. That way if something bad does happen you didn’t loose all of your money and you don’t have so much to try to get back from the credit card company.

Modesty Does Matter

In the day in which we live modesty does matter. Modest apparel is a bold statement of your love for Jesus Christ, respect for the church, and testimony of the true heart within.

How refreshing it is to see a bride presenting herself to her groom, adorned modestly. It’s a beautiful picture of Christ and His bride the church as described in the Holy Bible.

A modest bride confirms the testimony that she has lived daily before the Lord and those that love her. She leaves no question of her dedication to the Lord in the minds of her guests and brings no reproach to the name of Jesus Christ.

We are so grateful to the brides that have allowed us to be a part of their modest wedding day and look forward to serving many more. With Simply Elegant there are no more excuses for not being a modest bride.
